Home and Native Land

Home and Native Land follows the lives of two aboriginal men who’ve overcome adversity and are making a difference in their respective communities.

In Northern Quebec, the transformed village of Ouje-Bougoumou was recognized by the United Nations for its innovative design and sustainable living practices. But challenges still exist for this village, including social problems and addictions. In the same spirit of innovation that built his village, Chief Reggie Neeposh and his elders take their youth into the bush to launch an experimental program to re-direct their lives. Through traditional practices such as hunting, fishing and trapping, leaders run an appreciative-based talking circle to help their teens re-make their lives.

Also featured is Don Amero, a young recording artist who grew up in one of the toughest neighborhoods of Winnipeg. Despite being surrounded by an environment of addiction and violence, at an early age Don choose to follow a different path that would eventually lead him into music. Now an accomplished singer/songwriter, Don’s music has been recognized by the music industry. He has won 6 Songwriter or Male Artist of the year awards, including the Male Entertainer of the Year at the 2012 Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards. Even with a young family and a busy schedule of touring, Don takes time to mentor young aboriginal musicians in his studio.

Come with us as we explore how courageous and visionary individuals are changing the landscape of our Home and Native Land, one life at a time.
